Encephalartos inopinus

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Critically endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Semi shade to full sun.
  • Can sustain drought but does well with regular watering and good drainage.
  • Frost tolerant.

PROPAGATION:

  • Readily propagated from seed and suckers.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Mpumalanga Province in the Lydenburg district in the Steelpoort- and Olifants River valleys. Grows on steep mountain slopes on dolomite cliffs.

STEM:

  • Aerial and erect stem, but long stems tend to become decumbent.
  • Stem can attain a length of 6 meters with a diameter of 15 cm - 40 cm.
  • The stem of E. inopinus has a tawny beige colour with a mixture of small and large leaf bases, giving it a distinct appearance.

LEAVES:

  • Silvery green on the upper side and slightly paler on the lower side.
  • Leaves are stiff, straight and curve gradually downwards.
  • Leaflets do not shield one another.
CONES:
  • Yellowish green in both genders.
