Encephalartos striatus

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Threatened.

CULTIVATION:

  • Full sun to semi shade.
  • Regular watering but can sustain drought.
  • Relatively frost hardy.

PROPAGATION:

  • Relatively slow growing.
  • Seldom produce suckers and is almost exclusively propagated from seed.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • In Swaziland and the natural habitat is restricted to the valley of the Umbeluzi river.

  • Plants grow on steep slopes in savannah and bushveld.

STEM:

  • Erect subterranean stem.
  • Stem can reach a length of 30 cm and a diameter of 20 – 30 cm.

LEAVES:

  • Glossy dark green leaves.
  • Leaves are straight and stiff but can slightly curve downwards when in the shade.
  • Leaflets don’t shield one another.
  • Leaflet margins usually have 1 – 3 teeth to the terminal part of the leaflet.
  • There are no spines on the basal rachis.
CONES:
  • Both genders produce green cones which turn yellow when mature.
